Dr. Thomas G. Murn Sr. said goodbye to his family on January 19, at the age of 96. Born on May 12, 1925, in Ely, Minnesota, he graduated as Valedictorian from Ely High School.
He was a voracious reader of current medical journals, books, magazines and newspapers.
He loved summers on the lake as a fishing guide at Basswood Lodge. He served in the Army in WWII, earning a Bronze Star and Presidential (Distinguished) Unit and Personal Citation for extraordinary heroism in action. He earned a medical degree at the University of Minnesota and practiced in Thief River Falls and Chisholm before joining a practice in St Cloud in 1957 where he served the community until 1993.
His fishing partner, Mary “Mickie” Murn, with whom he had a loving marriage for 69 years, preceded him in death in 2018. They shared a love of fishing, saunas and watching the wildlife from the cabin window, as well as spending time with children, grandchildren and their church communities in Ely and St. Cloud.
Tom was deeply loved by his eight children Melanie; Mary Erickson (Steve); Thomas Jr. ( Patty); Shannon Kowalkowski (Dave); Tracy; Patrick (Kathy); Carey Moe (Mark); Michael “Kelly” (who preceded him in death) and his 15 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Many will remember “Dr. Murn” as a physician who took time to listen, who had an uncanny ability to diagnose medical issues without extensive testing and a doctor who saved lives. He was a great man who lived to serve and he will be greatly missed.
Donations to Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St Cloud or Poor Clare Monastery in Sauk Rapids would be appreciated. The family will have a private graveside service at a later date.
