Esther Beel, 94 of Blaine, formerly of Ely, dies

Esther Marie Cherne Beel, 94, formerly of Ely, passed away on October 15, 2018, in Blaine MN. She was born on June 7, 1924 in Ely to Michael G. and Frances Wenker Cherne. She graduated from Ely Memorial High School in 1942. She worked as a receptionist at the Shipman Hospital until moving to Chicago to work in the airplane industry during WW2. She married William O. (Chick) Beel on September 18, 1944 in Chicago. After Chick’s Army service, they settled in Ely, moving to Cedar Lake in June of 1960.

Esther was employed at The Gift Corner in the sixties and seventies. She loved her family, reading, gardening, the woods and RV trips with Chick.

She was preceded in death by Chick, her husband of 68+ years in May 2013; her son, Robert; her parents; five brothers, Jesse, Leslie, Dennis, Fritz all of Ely, and Calvin of Virginia; four sisters, Dorothy Pietila and Helen Riikola of Ely, Rita McLean of Watsonville, CA and Lorraine Olsen of Bishop CA; and her son-in-law, John Pollock.

She is survived by daughter, Sandra, Blaine; son, Michael, Isanti, MN; granddaughter, Stacy Welch, and great-granddaughter, Charlotte Welch, of Elk River MN; daughter-in-law, Gayle, Centreville VA; her youngest brother, Stan, Ely; and many nieces and nephews.

At Esther’s request, there will be no service. Family arrangements have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely.

Jo-Ellen Patterson , 81, dies

Jo-Ellen Patterson passed away on Sunday, October 14, 2018 at the Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely MN.
Jo-Ellen was born on June 12, 1937 to John and Ellen Kotzian. She married the love of her life Kimbel Patterson on June 23, 1956 at the First Presbyterian Church in Ely and they were married for 53 years.
Jo-Ellen loved spending time with her “Mister” (Kim) countless hours of dancing, fishing, camping and numerous projects throughout their life. Jo-Ellen worked in the food services industry most of her life. She will always be remembered for her years at the Ely Memorial Senior High School lunch room. Jo-Ellen and her partner Julie Musich ran MAPS Catering Service for more than 20 years. Her proudest moment being catering for the American Legion World Series Baseball tournament in 1980.
She was preceded in death by her husband Kim, her parents John and Ellen, and her brother Patrick and sister in law Betty Kotzian.
Jo-Ellen is survived by her son Ward (Karen) Patterson; her daughter Kim Puzel (Brian, special friend). Grandchildren: Cheri (Dean) DeBeltz; Alaina (Dustin) George; JJ ( Ronda) Puzel ; Becky (Nate) Moyer; Brynn Patterson (Patrick, special friend) as well as 11 great grandchildren.
There will be a celebration of life gathering at Ward and Karen’s house, 2528 Verbick Road Ely, MN on Saturday October 27, 2018 from 1 pm to 5 pm. Arrangements are by Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia.

Marilyn Rose Hays, 88, dies

Marilyn Rose Hays, 88, of Mendota Heights, MN is reunited with her parents John and Rose, husbands LeRoy and Alfred and brother John with our Lord Jesus on October 13, 2018.
Survived by daughter Jennifer (Chris) and son Sean (Paula), grandchildren Logan, Connor, Amye, Ryan, Zakk, and great grandchildren Carson, Zoie and great great grandchildren Aiyden and Aryia, sister-in-law Agnes, nieces Jean (John), Marian, grand nieces Catherine, Elizabeth, Christine, Erin, and nephews Jim (Karen), John and Joe (Barb). Marilyn was born in Ely, MN on April 26, 1930.
She graduated with high honors from Ely High School as salutatorian. She attended Ely Junior College before transferring to the Nursing School at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. After earning her RN degree she joined the Santa Fe Railroad as a nurse. She was one of the first nurses to travel across the country on the train. Marilyn taught nursing at South Dakota State University for many years. She worked at St. Luke’s and St. Joseph’s in St. Paul, MN as an RN, eventually settling at United Hospital where she spent over 20 years as a nurse educator.
Marilyn was an avid reader, traveler, writer and story teller. She loved her family and friends fiercely. She deeply enjoyed the arts; music, dance, and theater. She loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and volunteered many, many hours at her long time parish St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Mendota.
Marilyn loved her two children Sean and Jennifer more than anything in this world, and we’ll miss her dearly. Many thanks and appreciation to her caregivers Paula, Theo, Natalie, Ryan and Carson. Without them we would not have been able to keep her in her home.
Funeral service at 11 a.m. (visitation 10-11 a.m.) Friday, October 26 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 1405 Sibley Memorial Hwy, St Paul, MN 55150. Interment at St. Peter’s Catholic Church Cemetery. Memorials preferred to St. Peter’s Catholic Church or your favorite arts organization.

Glen “Scratch” Zorman, 61, of Ely, dies

Glen “Scratch” Zorman, 61, of Ely, lived until Saturday, October 13, 2018. He spent his final days at home cared for by his loving wife, Lynn, his family, friends and faithful dog, Jani.
Glen was born in Ely on April 22, 1957, the seventh child of Art and Betty Ann (Tjader) Zorman. He was an Air Force veteran and spent most of his life in Ely. Glen lived a unique life after a serious car accident in 1982 should have taken him, but we were gifted with many extra years. He thoroughly enjoyed his friends from all over the country who always made a point to stop and visit.
Glen was blessed with luck and love when he met his best friend, Lynn, whom he married in 2013. Those were his happiest years. His many friends will remember NASCAR races, rides around the lake, the occasional cocktail, and of course, an exaggerated story. He will be greatly missed.
Glen is survived by his wife Lynn of Ely; mother Betty Ann of Ely; brothers: Sam (Marlene) of Winton, Dale (Patty) of Remer and Baudette, Jack (Nancy) of Ely; sister Donna of Tower; sons: Ken (Ashley) Larson of Chisholm, Michael Zorman of New York City, NY; stepchildren: Kelly Levine of Los Angeles, CA; Jonathon (Cate) Levine of Chicago, IL; Jessica Gantt (Harrison) of Eagan, MN; Max Gantt and Ben Gantt of Ely; grandchildren: Raven, Maddie, Hannah, Grayson and Gabriel whom he adored; numerous nieces, nephews, friends and his dog Jani.
He was preceded in death by his father Art; sister Peg Pohve; brothers Gene (Grouse), and Don (Herm); Niko the dog and Sasquatch the gutter cat.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at Kerntz Funeral Home in Ely from 12:30-1:30 p.m. A binge of life will be held at a later date to be announced.

Molly F. (Gotchnik) Milberry age 89 of Crosby dies

Molly F. Milberry age 89 of Crosby died on October 23, 2018 at Heartwood Senior Living in Crosby. She was born on November 29, 1928 in Ely, MN to Joseph and Mary (Stefan) Gotchnik.
Molly attended school in Ely until she moved to Crosby when she was 15 to help her aunt, Molly Domin, run her boarding house for miners. She graduated from the Crosby-Ironton High School. Molly married Joseph “Bud” Milberry in Crosby on March 29, 1947. She worked as a seamstress in her home while raising her four children. She then worked at Bierman’s Locker, which later became Mr. Meats. In 1994 she retired from the Crosby Clinic in Crosby where she was clinic manager. Molly was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Crosby, the CCW and the National Catholic Society of Foresters, St. Mary’s Court 854.
Molly is survived by one son, Tom (Carrie) Milberry of Dayton; three daughters, Karen (Terry Palmen) Leitch of Inver Grove Hgts, Ginny (John) Savaloja of Crosby and Kathy Jo (Adolph) Rono of Crosby; one sister, Mary Ann Pulis of Ely; ten grandchildren,12 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Preceding Molly in death are her parents; her husband in 2002; a great grandson, Jesse Edwards; one brother, Joe Gotchnik and one sister, Delores “Tootsie” Brenna.
A Memorial Mass will be 12:00 p.m. on Friday, November 2, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Crosby. Burial will be at the Scandia Cemetery in Deerwood. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Arrangements are with the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby.

Helen (Prasnicki) Laitinen, 73, of Princeton, MN, peacefully passed away on October 23rd 2018 with loving family at her side.
Helen was born in Gilman, Wisconsin to John and Helen Prasnicki on February 24th, 1945 and graduated high school in Silver Bay, Mn. Prior to retirement she worked as a receptionist for The University of Minnesota Foundation for 12 years in Minneapolis. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, family, and friends. She will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure to know her.
Helen is preceded in death by husband Gary Laitinen, parents John and Helen Prasnicki, and brothers Stephen and Frank Prasnicki.
Helen is survived by her children Tim (Lynn) Laitinen, Chris Laitinen, Bill (Cynthia) Laitinen, Steve Laitinen, Nancy (Chris) McCormick. Brothers and sisters Aloys Prasnicki, Rita (Jim) Garni, Liz Hyrkas, Roger (Rosalin) Prasnicki, and Julie (Butch) Ernst, 17 Grandchildren and seven Great-Grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at The Holy Trinity Church located at 1326 4th ST NW, Elk River Mn. 55330 on November 3, 2018. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. with the service starting at 11 a.m.

Wallace “Wally”Chester Kuehl, 95, passed away on November 2, 2018 in Finland, MN surrounded by family at his home.
Wallace was born September 1, 1923 to Hugo and Harriet (Kile) Kuehl in Thorp WI. He was a proud WWII Vet, serving in the Army.
He married Vera (Cornwell) Kuehl on Jan 4, 1947. They farmed near Thorp, WI. In 1957 Wallace moved to Minnesota to work as a logger, his family followed in ’59.
He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Victor and James; sister Esther and a granddaughter, Lucinda (Cindy Lou) Kuehl.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Vera (Cornwell) Kuehl. Seven Children: Wally (Joyce), Elroy, Linda (Alan), Willy (Evelyn), Harriet (Roger), Jacqueline (Andres) and Katherine (Daniel).
Grandchildren: Reggie, Danielle, James, Suzette, Scott, Jessica, Rodney, Aaron, Travis, Roger, Karen, Benjamin, Barett. Brother Bernie (Jean) and sister Ruth (Leland) Cornwell and more than 30 great grandchildren.
Funeral will be Friday, November 9 at 11 am at the Clair Nelson center in Finland, MN.

ANTHONY MATHEW (TONY) KNAPP, 82, DIES

ANTHONY MATHEW (TONY) KNAPP, 82, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Mankato, Minnesota on November 10, 2018. He was surrounded by his family after a courageous six-month battle with pancreatic cancer.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, November 15 at Hosanna Lutheran Church. He will be interred at Calvary Cemetery in Mankato.
A memorial visitation will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14, at the Mankato Mortuary and also at the church for one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
Tony was born on September 27, 1936 in Ely, Minnesota to Anton and Mary Knapp. He graduated from Ely High School and went on to the Ely Junior College for two years.
Tony loved learning throughout his entire life, and he completed his teaching degree from St. Cloud Teachers College before earning his Master’s degree at Mankato State University.
He started teaching in Eyota-Dover at age 20—too young to sign a teacher’s contract in those days. In 1964, he moved to Mankato and taught ninth grade at Franklin Jr. High School. He always said that “someone has to love them.”
He went on to teach ninth grade social studies and 12th grade psychology at Mankato East High School, meanwhile coaching boys and girls gymnastics, and girls diving and track.
For his dedication to his students, he was honored with the District 77 Teacher of the Year Award in 1986. Tony taught for 35 years and retired in 1993. He loved his students and they always felt that they could confide and trust in him.
Tony loved his community and was a public servant for most of his life. He was on the Mankato Police Reserves and was a part-time police officer for 17 years. He was a member of the Mankato City Council for 12 years and served on the Blue Earth County Corrections board for 22 years.
Tony married the love of his life, Sharon Williams, on October 10, 1959. They were blessed with three daughters. Tony will be dearly missed by his family and by the many people who came to know him as a friend over the years. Kind and compassionate, he will be remembered as a great husband, father, grandfather, teacher, coach, friend and neighbor.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon; his daughters, Patricia (Joe) Cruse of Scottsdale, Arizona, Suzanne (Scott) Stenseth of St. Cloud, Minnesota, and Cheryl (Rob) Hernandez of Indio, California; grandchildren, Marie (Alex) Hess, April Stenseth, and Josh and Natalie Kanter; brothers, Ken (Kay) Knapp of Rochester, Minnesota, and Mike (Mary Jane) Knapp of Grand Rapids, Minnesota; along with 15 nieces and nephews.
He was proceeded in death by his parents; sister, Cathy; and niece, Laurel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to Hosanna Lutheran Church, Wolverton Scholarship, the American Cancer Society, and Mayo Clinic Health System—Hospice.
