Sharon J. Karlinski (nee Kantorski), 75, of Maplewood, MN, formerly of Ely, MN, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on February 7, 2019. Sharon is survived by the children she cherished; Marlene (Rick) Smith of Madison, WI; David (Stephanie) Karlinski of Hermosa, SD; and Karen Karlinski of Hugo, MN. She is also survived by her grandchildren Abbey and Kevin Karlinski, special friends Ron and Rosa Hornig of Ely, and her beloved feline friend, Suzie.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Alice Kantorski of Buffalo NY, and numerous aunts and uncles. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Edith May Olsen, 97, dies

Edith May Olsen, 97, passed away Thursday, May 9, 2019 at Carefree Assisted Living in Virginia, MN surrounded by her family and loved ones.
Edith was the mother of four children and an educator on the Iron Range who was one of the last one room school teachers in Minnesota. She was a wonderful French cook and her great meals were central to her family life.
She is survived by her sons Hans (Eve) Olsen III and Paul Olsen, daughter Winnifred Olsen, grandson Hans (Skeet) Olsen IV and Chad Olsen, and granddaughters Marja Nelson and Christine Klein, and six great-grandchildren, Kayla, Erik, Christian, John, Lily and Anna along with many nieces and nephews and other family members living in the area. Edith also enjoyed the company of a few remaining friends of her own generation right to the end of her long, sweet life. She cherished those friendships. May Heaven keep her.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents James and Winnifred Dalbec, originally of Hibbing, MN, husband Hans Jr., son Loren and by her four siblings.
Arrangements are with the Landmark Funeral Home in Virginia.

Virginia Schneider, 90, dies

Virginia Schneider, 90, passed away Friday, May 10, 2019 surrounded by friends and family in Virginia, Minnesota.She was born April 21, 1929 in Wilmette, Illinois as the second of five siblings. Around the age of 20, she met her husband James Schneider to whom she was married for over 60 years.
In her early years, she worked as a switch board operator and a manager at Hackney’s for 23 years before moving to Ely, Minnesota in 1976. She and her skilled siblings built an incredible home on the lake where hundreds of family members visited over the subsequent years, earning many titles including; camp counselor, bottle washer, and pecan roll maker. When not hosting family, she volunteered at the hospital, participated in the sewing club, and developed programs for seniors.
Those that knew her tenacity would not be surprised she was the first and only of her siblings to reach the milestone of 90 years. She celebrated this achievement with over 70 family members this past Easter, a testament to her vivacious spirit and graciousness that brought people together. This celebration of life will serve as her memorial, and we sincerely appreciate all the incredible folks who helped to make it happen. She was preceded in death by her four siblings, Jane, Bill, Ted, and Jim, and her late husband James Edward Schneider. She is survived by her only daughter, Sally Ann Seabert (Schneider), her only grandson, Anthony James Seabert, and an extensive network of in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and greats.

Patricia Gruba, 83, of Sauk Rapids, MN dies

Patricia Gruba, 83, of Sauk Rapids, MN passed away May 31, 2019 at the Good Shepherd Community under the care of St. Croix Hospice.
Patricia Frances Gruba was born March 14, 1936 in Gilman, Minnesota to Charles and Mary (Sodowski) Lepinski. Some of Patricia’s fondest memories of her childhood were times spent helping her dad on the family farm and riding her horse. She married John Gruba on October 17, 1953 at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Gilman. She was a traditional homemaker who gardened, canned, and took great pride in her family home. Together the couple raised three sons. In her younger years, Pat volunteered at the St. Cloud Hospital, caring for newborns in the nursery.
The couple started Gruba Cabinets in Sauk Rapids and operated the business until 1975. They moved to Ely and purchased the Silver Rapids Lodge, which they owned and operated until 1992. While at the resort, they acquired many friends from around the continental United States and visited many of them throughout the years. After their retirement, they moved to the Duelm area. Pat always said that her grandchildren were her greatest blessing and that they brought a smile to her face and a twinkle to her eye.
She is survived by her sons: Rod (Sheila) Gruba, Ely; David (Kathy) Gruba, Ely and Jeff Gruba of Becker. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren: Adam, Eric, Kimberly Egan, Andy and Ryan and 7 great grandchildren: Brooke, Brant, Madelyn, Olivia, Willow, Eva, Emma and sisters and brother: Rose Dohrmann, Sauk Rapids; Annette Starr, Medford, OR; Carl, Brooklyn Center and many other relatives and friends She is preceded in death by her parents and husband, John and brothers and sisters: Dorothy, Marcella, Irene, Robert, Richard and Clara.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at the Foley Funeral Home. Rev. Ralph Zimmerman will Officiate. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 AM at the funeral home and burial will follow at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery, Gilman. Service with Dignity provided by the Foley Funeral Home.

Gloria Starkman, 83, dies

Gloria Starkman, 83, passed away on January 5, 2019 in Austin, TX. She was born on March 31, 1935, to Violet (Maki) Lassey and Charles Lassey in Ely, MN. She was a graduate of the Ely schools where she had been active in dramatics, cheer leading, and the Drum and Bugle Corps. Gloria also attended St. Cloud State College. In 1956 she was married to Russell Starkman in Ely. They lived in a number of places throughout the country while Russell was a USAF pilot. They retired in Austin, TX where Gloria was as a certified interior decorator. Gloria and Russell maintained a summer home on White Iron Lake.
Russell and Gloria had two sons, Robert and Gregory. Gloria was a member of Triumphant Life Lutheran Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Gloria was predeceased by her parents, her husband Russell, and her two sons. She is survived by her sister Carol Lassey of Ely, her two “special daughters” Melanie Cobb and Debora Patrick, and numerous cousins including the Kesses and Lasseys in the Ely area.
Graveside services will be held at the White Iron cemetery, rural Ely, on June 15, 2019 at 1:00 pm. Rev. Barbara Hegfors will officiate.

John A. “Chocs” Zbasnik, 100, dies

John A. “Chocs” Zbasnik, 100, passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2019 at the Ely Bloomenson Community Hospital. John was born in Ely, Mn., one of six children to Frank and Mary Zbasnik. John was a lifelong resident of Ely and a life time member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. John attended Ely schools and at the age of 17 joined the CC Camps. He worked in the Pioneer Mine until WWII broke out and was drafted into the Army in 1942. He spent two years at Minter Field, Ca. and two years in Germany. After the war ended in 1946 he returned to Pioneer Mine for 26 years. When Pioneer Mine closed in 1967 he went to work at Minntac for four years and then Reserve Mining for another 9.5 years. John’s family and his faith were most important to him. He really enjoyed time with his grandsons and great grandchildren. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, blueberry picking and driving up the Fernberg road. John was preceded in death by his wife Angeline and son Robert. John is survived by his sons Jon (Bette) Zbasnik of Pleasanton, Ca. and Jim Zbasnik of St. Paul, Mn. and his daughter Cindy (Jack) Lucking of Roseville, Mn., grandsons Nick Lucking (great grandson Nikko) and John (Stefanie) Lucking (great grandsons Logan and Gavin), grandson Dan (Laura) Lysher, Heather and McKenzie, nephews: John (Gloria) Seliga, Jerome (Paula) Seliga and Randy (Doreen) Zbasnik and niece Jean Seliga.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2019 at 11AM at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ely with visitation being held one hour prior to the service at the church. Family arrangements have been entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely.

Mary Lobe, 93, of South St. Paul, MN, although most of her life was spent in Ely, MN.
She passed away June 3, 2019 at Woodlyn Heights Senior Living, Inver Grove Heights. Mary was born in Ely, MN on April 15, 1926 to Leopold and Frances Kuzma. She is survived by son, Frank (Jeanne LeRoy) of Faribault, MN; daughters, Cynthia (Jay) of Lakeland, MN and Patricia of South St. Paul, MN; grandchildren: Andrew, Demoray (Tom), Leslie and Daryl (Crystal); great-grandchildren: Ashley, Jessica, Justin, Steven and Joseph; brother, Peter Lilek of Ely, MN and Frances Anthonsen of Cottage Grove, MN. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Leopold and Frances (nee Lilek) Kuzma and son, Robert. A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held from 4-7 PM Monday, June 10, at Roberts Funeral Home, 8108 Barbara Ave., Inver Grove Heights, MN. Interment at the Ely Cemetery, Ely, MN, will be held at a later date.
